The Receipt: Witch Trials Tee
In 1486 a book about the devil gave Europe a framework. Catholic and Protestant authorities alike put it to work.
Over three centuries, nearly 100,000 people were prosecuted for witchcraft and 40,000–60,000 were executed, mostly women. Theology supplied the charge; fear, famine and neighbours supplied the names. This tee prints the bill: ITEM: Witch Trials. DATES: c.1450–1750. WHO PAID: The accused. THANK YOU FOR BELIEVING.
Every figure is a historians' estimate, printed as a range. See our sources.
