Somebody always pays. When Yugoslavia broke apart, nationalist leaders took three neighbouring faiths (Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim) and turned them into front lines. Neighbours who had shared villages for generations were sorted by which house of worship their grandparents used.

By 1995, the ICTY's demographers estimated 104,732 deaths, and about 3,290 religious buildings (mosques, churches and monasteries) had been destroyed or damaged.
